How Well Do We Know About Pool Filtration?

What is Pool Filtration System?

As we all know, the pool filtration system is as important to your pool as your kidney is to your own body. The main purpose of the pool filter is to clarify the water by removing undissolved debris from the pool water. There are three types of pool filters – sand filter, diatomaceous earth, and cartridge.

Sand Filter

Sand filter media includes sand silica, zeosand, and filter glass. For the most part, you can use about 20% less filter glass than you would silica to filter debris as small as 5 microns. Also, sand filter has the longest life span compared to other types of filters.

Cartridge Filter

A plastic cylinder surrounded by pleated polyester filter media with caps on each end of the cartridge. This filter performs well at low speed, such as with variable-speed pumps. One good thing about cartridge filter is that it does not require backwashing. Therefore, cartridge filter will use less water compared to sand filter.

Diatomaceous Earth (D.E.) Filter

One of the top-rated pool filters is D.E. filter. Generally, D.E. made pool filters are heat-treated. This type of filter is composed of several grids to hold the D.E powder. Compared with the other two filters, this one is able to trap the smallest particles by 5 microns more.

Which pool filter is best suitable for your pool?

Most of the pool owners would choose D.E. Filter. As D.E. filter has the best filtration ability to trap small particles. This is followed by sand filter which is easy to maintain and a normal sand filter would have 5 years life span. On the other hand, cartridge filter performs more effectively for smaller pools such as jacuzzi or water features.

In fact, a filter will not function properly without a pump to move water through it. And neither will it work well if the size of the pump does not correspond to the size of your pool.

One frequently asked question is when do we need to clean filter elements or replace filter media?

Over time, these filter elements or media trap small particles due to over functioning. Eventually, this will prevent proper water flow through the filter which will slowly reduce the filter’s efficiency. Therefore, the pool water will easily become cloudy or milky when a pool filtration system is insufficient. Again, poor water quality may pose health risks to swimmers. Hence, we will need to replace filter media or filter elements in order to keep the pool clean.
